WHO Reports First Human Shamonda Virus Infection in France as Nigeria Confirms Ebola Case
WHO reports the first documented human Shamonda virus infection in France after an immunocompromised patient died. Meanwhile, Nigeria confirms an imported Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease case in Abuja, with 44 contacts identified for monitoring.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the virus had previously been detected only in animals, including cattle, sheep, goats and horses. The virus is believed to spread among animals through the bites of midges, small fly-like insects.
However, further studies are needed to establish how the infection was transmitted to the patient in France and to assess the potential public health risks associated with the virus.
The reported infection comes as Nigeria has confirmed an imported case of Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja. Health authorities have identified 44 contacts for monitoring following the confirmation.
The developments involve two separate viral infections: the first documented human Shamonda virus infection reported in France and an imported Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease case confirmed in Nigeria. Further investigation into the Shamonda virus transmission and continued monitoring of identified contacts in Nigeria remain important aspects of assessing the potential public health implications of both incidents.
